We begin this walk at the Stadium of Light - home of Sunderland Football Club - and immediately drop down to the River Wear - one of the region’s longest rivers - before following a path all the way along to Sunderland Marina.
From here, we pick up Marine Walk, and enjoy a salty stroll along a stretch of sandy beach, before heading up to Whitburn Park Nature Reserve. We pass by the iconic Souter Lighthouse, and continue on to Marsden Rock along some beautifully rugged coastline.
Heading inland along Bede’s Way, we pass through Marsden Quarry nature reserve, then round onto the Cleadon Hills before dropping back down into Whitburn.
From here, we retrace our steps along the coast, winding back along the river to our start point at the Stadium of Light. A very enjoyable coastal walk.
